“…every baptised person , precisely by reason of being baptised, has the
right to receive from the Church education and instruction enabling him or her to
enter on a truly Christian life…” (Catechesi Tradendae 14).
2.4.1 The work of this Committee will include
- educating Catholics on the biblical concept of social justice and Catholic Social
Teaching. There is an urgent need to strengthen the integration of social justice
into the faith life of the parish community and to mobilise parishioners and parish
resources to assist in the task of promoting social justice. Some of the work in this
area will involve study and reflection, while others will be more action-oriented;
- devising and implementing strategies that will increase parishioners’ awareness
of their mission to promote social justice that will allow Catholics to share their
common humanity, and that will encourage them to commit themselves to living the Gospel;
- identifying, sharing and promoting good practice at parish level with regard to service
provision, advocacy and empowerment. This would involve priests, religious, Public
Associations of Christ’s Faithful, ecclesial communities, and laity. There are
many gifts and talents within our faith community and the Committee will work with
parishes to identify and draw on the gifts and talents of the faithful, including
our young people, and assist in building bridges of solidarity within and between
parishes;
- supporting/encouraging catechists and RCIA workers to design and disseminate among
their colleagues relevant educational programmes/materials on social justice issues
which should be integrated into their work;
- The Education of Catholic students in Primary and Secondary Schools in TT and of Catholic
students attending Government Schools. The Committee will work with Catholic schools
and with those Catholic Educators appointed to work with Catholic students attending
Government Secondary Schools to develop more innovative ways to communicate Catholic
social teaching to students, parents and teachers; to provide civic, human rights
and values education for students and to encourage students, parents and teachers
to participate in the social and political affairs of TT, particularly in relation
to social justice issues;
- Political systems and the role of Catholics in the political arena;
- The social consequences of illiteracy
- Citizenship issues; values/morals in education; strategies for promoting a culture
of peace and love.
